Teledata joins the Datum Group

In September 2022 we added Manchester-based Teledata to our data centre portfolio.

Datum announces first regional acquisition

In September 2022, we announced our acquisition of Teledata, a colocation data centre in Manchester. This represented our first regional acquisition as part of our expansion strategy.

Manchester is the second largest economic area in the UK and an ideal location for our regional expansion. The addition of this second site to Datum’s portfolio has enhanced our service offering not just through the introduction of a second site, but also through Teledata’s network services and its active-active cloud platform.

This acquisition has brought an additional 22,000 ft2 of technical space to our offering, based at Teledata’s existing MCR1 data centre, while a second facility – MCR2 – which is scheduled to open in 2024, will bring another 50,000 ft2 of space and up to 10 data halls online.

One of the most well-connected and protected data centre sites in the UK

Established in 2004, Teledata is an award-winning ISO27001 accredited data centre based in south Manchester, close to Manchester airport. Providing premium colocation, cloud hosting and data centre services to businesses across the UK, Teledata delivers the highest levels of service and support, putting people at the heart of its technology to build secure, resilient solutions that are designed to help optimise business performance and growth.

Teledata is proud to be one of the most well-connected and protected data centres in the UK having invested over £1 million into a security and operations control centre (SOC) which makes Teledata the only data centre in the world with an NSI Gold Approved BS5979 security centre on site.

In 2016 Teledata entered the cloud marketplace through its acquisition of 1st Easy and in 2019 made a six-figure investment into its own cloud platform – CloudActiv. Built on VMware vSAN stretched cluster technology, CloudActiv is an active-active cloud solution that provides constant, sub-millisecond replication between two identical platforms in two separate UK locations to deliver instant disaster recovery as standard.

Teledata’s energy efficiency commitment

A key reason for our choice of Teledata as our first regional acquisition was its approach to environmental efficiency.

Prior to our acquisition of Teledata, the company had already taken significant steps to monitor and reduce the amount of energy used in line with Manchester’s pledge to become a carbon neutral city by 2038. The firm had invested over £2 million into energy efficiencies and in 2019 became the first colocation facility in the UK to join the smart grid with battery storage as part of a project to improve environmental efficiencies with low loss transformer and voltage optimisation. This project helped to boost the resilience of the facility by improving the shelf life of equipment, while reducing unnecessary energy waste and optimising the incoming power supply.

Then, in 2020, Teledata won the Data Centre Energy Efficiency Project of the Year award at the prestigious Data Centre Solutions (DCS) Awards.
