Farnborough-based colocation data centre providers, Datum, have joined forces with networking firm Next Connex to provide customers with a direct link to Jisc’s Janet network.
As one of only a few UK data centres with this arrangement in place, the deal will enable Datum to service a much wider range of organisations (there are reportedly 18 million Janet users in the UK at present).
Janet is a high-speed network for the UK research and education community. A Janet Network connection gives you an extremely reliable and high bandwidth network that supports innovation, research and learning and may also provide you with access to additional Jisc services.
Through Next Connex’s private direct connection to the Janet network, Datum can offer their services to Jisc's members and customers. This direct connection provides guaranteed bandwidth that wouldn't be provided over the public internet, thereby offering a further level of assurance and security.
Currently focusing in the academic and scientific sectors, these partnerships will allow colocation providers like Datum to give their customers access to public services networks. This will not only make their customer’s lives easier, but also enable each customer, where the market is relevant, to win more business within the sector.
Of the partnership, Dominic Phillips (Datum’s Managing Director) said “Datum is delighted to be able add a further extension to the connectivity options that we offer our customers to help them meet their business objectives.”
"Due to the peering that Next Connex has agreed with Jisc, our customers can quickly obtain access to Janet through a single or a diverse link with the assurance of a private connection and not relying on the public internet with the associated potential security challenges or latency issues, nor having to build in the 60 working days needed to set up a private link.”
