In September 2022, we proudly welcomed Teledata (an independent colocation data centre based in Manchester) into the newly formed Datum Group. Notably, this acquisition gave the Datum Group a truly national presence with sites in the two most economically important regions of the UK - the South East (our flagship Farnborough site – FRN1) and the North West (Teledata’s Manchester site - MCR1). This expansion was spurred on by our acquisition by UBS Asset Management to support our growth and expansion into key regional markets.
Why Teledata?
Teledata has developed an excellent reputation in its local (currently underserved) market and is one of the few remaining independent data centres in the region. Due to historic undersupply and consolidation, there is currently very little capacity available in the Manchester area. So, whilst the region is experiencing robust growth, it is lacking in supportive infrastructure. This made it the optimal choice of location for our expansion beyond our current single-site footprint in Farnborough, particularly as it offers an immediate opportunity to expand into an adjacent building on Teledata’s existing site.
Like Datum, Teledata provides premium colocation, offering:
- 100% uptime
- 2(N+N) resilience
- ISO 27001 certified
- NSI Gold Approved BS5979 security
- An ideal location at the heart of one of the Manchester Airport City Enterprise Zones
- A hybrid offering with cloud and colocation
- 24/7 technical support
Alongside its colocation, Teledata offers a range of additional services allowing for sales synergies for the group’s enterprise clients, such as its network services and its own cloud platform (CloudActiv). Built on VMware vSAN stretched cluster technology, CloudActiv is an active-active cloud solution that provides constant, sub-millisecond replication between two identical platforms in two separate UK locations to deliver instant disaster recovery as standard.
A shared ethos
The future success of the new Datum Group is based on a strong and fruitful partnership between our CEO (Dominic Phillips) and Teledata’s Commercial Director (Matt Edgley), a relationship that precedes the formation of Datum and Teledata and is based on mutual trust and respect.
Service provision
Our focus has always been to provide more than a mere property transaction, which is why it was essential for us to join forces with a provider that echoes our values when it comes to service excellence, superior security, and a dedication to environmental efficiency. Like Datum, Teledata believes that its clients require a partner, not a supplier, and this attitude is clearly reflected in the service it provides.
Energy-efficiency
We have always been committed to energy efficiency – our environmentally intelligent, carrier-neutral facility was launched in 2012 to deliver the most energy efficient colocation on the market - and a key element of this is our energy-efficient adiabatic cooling. Like us, Teledata are focused on energy efficiencies, and recently became the first colocation facility in the UK to join the smart grid with battery storage with low loss transformer and voltage optimisation to boost the resilience of its facility by improving the shelf life of equipment, reducing unnecessary energy waste, and optimising the incoming power supply. In December 2020, Teledata was awarded Data Centre Energy Efficiency Project of the Year Award at the prestigious DCS (Data Centre Solutions) awards, for the work it has undertaken to improve its efficiencies and reduce its carbon output.
Security
Whilst our facility is located on the high security Cody Technology Park campus offering 24/7 security and guarded entrances, Teledata is proud to be one of the most well-connected and protected data centres in the UK having invested over £1 million into a Security and Operations Control Centre, making it the only data centre in the world with an NSI Gold Approved BS5979 security centre on-site.
Ongoing growth - new data centre facilities in the pipeline
Alongside continuing to offer the very best colocation services across the Datum Group, we are excited to announce that we will be building two brand new colocation facilities across the two locations – FRN2 in Farnborough, and MCR2 in Manchester:
- FRN2 in Farnborough will provide 600 footprints on the ground floor, with scope to double this capacity on the first floor. All data halls will provide an average power density of 3.5kW/footprint, capability to deliver high density compute of up to 30kW/footprint, and Tier 3+ resilience.
- MCR2 in Manchester will be carrier neutral and built to enterprise standards, and will offer up to 25,000 ft2 of space, 4MVA of power and over 1,000 new server racks.
There has never been a better time to get on board. If you have forthcoming colocation requirements, or you’re still considering your options, why not get in touch to find out how the Datum Group can help you?
