The Amazon effect is showing itself to be a beast with many tails. It doesn’t take a doctorate to see how the retail world and the associated supply chain is being turned upside down by Amazon and other successful online retailers. Every week the news headlines call out a national high street name that is having to restructure or close. What is maybe less obvious, unless you are directly impacted, is its effect on the cost and availability of warehouse spaces. For the data centre world, this is a triple whammy – the traditional source of real estate suitable for conversion into data centres is drying up, the competition for available structures is driving up costs, and the push by hyperscalers is eating up the larger sites.
The fortunate providers are those who have planned ahead with space and capacity to expand even in the current challenging environment. Which is exactly what Datum did when we launched in 2013. We chose a site that would provide our clients with the extra reassurance of the highest levels of security and would also provide us with the space to build up and out into the foreseeable future. That future is here with plans underway to expand and build a second data centre.
Building on a winning formula
Datum’s service-led approach to colocation, delivered from a premium facility, has proved its worth, while the development of strategic partnerships within the delivery model has ensured that our flexible service-based approach is a perfect fit for businesses looking to transform their IT via hybrid cloud. We now boast an impressive client list which encompasses organisations large and small across both private and public sectors, serving vertical markets from Finance and Insurance through IT Security Services, Defence and Engineering, and including companies from the FTSE 250 and Fortune 500.

Space to grow….
To accommodate anticipated growth, Datum’s modular facility was designed to incorporate the latest and most effective technology available at each stage of the build. Today, our main hall delivers 2MW of power with a further floor offering 2MW currently available, something that could be of particular interest for a business looking for a ready-to-go custom build.
….and then some
The appeal to clients of the existing data centre being on a highly secure park is extremely strong and is often a key factor in initially shortlisting Datum. With the time ripe for a more significant growth step, a new data centre, the decision was made to continue our expansion on the same highly secure, government-grade site. The new state of the art facility currently in planning will be link-detached to the existing data halls.
In order to continue to deliver the high standards for which Datum is known, the facility has been designed to Tier III resilience, and comprises 2 new data halls for 600 racks, each to accommodate up to 1000kW with a per rack power density of 3.3kW.
With this new addition, Datum looks forward to further building on our excellent track record of supporting clients as they embark on revitalising their IT to meet market and competitive demands and delivering a proven platform for their digital transformation projects.
