We are thrilled to have been shortlisted as a finalist for the ‘SME 100 Growth Award (under £10m)’ category at this year’s Thames Valley SME 100 Growth awards. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at Lamborghini Pangbourne on Thursday 30 September 2021.
The journey began when Datum was included in the Thames Valley SME 100 Growth Index in July 2021; a listing of fast-rising SMEs in the Thames Valley region first published in 2019 by The Business Magazine.
This listing recognises and promotes the region’s high-growth small and medium-sized enterprises. From this listing of 100, we were ultimately shortlisted as a finalist for the award in the ‘SME 100 Growth Award (under £10m)’ category.
This nomination is testament to our strong growth, despite the challenges of the past few years. Our focus throughout the pandemic was to secure the future of our business and continue to strengthen the relationships between the Datum team and our growing client and partner base. We are proud to have maintained a 20% growth rate throughout the pandemic, demonstrated by our highest ever EBITDA profit in 2021.
Safe haven and platform for growth
To complement the engineering quality and efficiency of our Farnborough facility, we have always taken a service-first approach based on flexible contracting and partnerships with our clients and partners. Our clients receive bespoke service and account management, proactive reporting for complete transparency, and access to a dedicated client service manager and in-house engineering team. This service-led approach came into its own during the pandemic when our clients (and indeed new prospects) were struggling with the challenges posed by Covid. We were able to support them, ensure access to their IT infrastructure, protect their business-critical IT estate and workloads, and offer a platform for continued growth, despite the troubles we were all facing. As such, both our installed client base and new name client growth was stellar during this period.
New developments and looking to the future
Hot on the heels of our mid-pandemic expansion through the build out of the first floor of our Farnborough facility, the recent acquisition of Datum by UBS Asset Management is testament to the solidity, reliability and attractiveness of our business model. This acquisition will support site expansion and the further development of our platform, and will provide certainty to our clients and business partners. In addition, planning permission has already been granted for a new hall comprising two 1 MW data halls designed to Tier 3+ resilience and link-detached to our existing facility. This will facilitate our growth and enable us to continue contributing to the local economy.
…but not at any environmental cost
We take our environmental commitments extremely seriously and are driven by a commitment to limiting our environmental impact by using renewable power supplies, carbon offsetting and environmentally intelligent infrastructure. This allows us to continue providing our clients with the very best colocation services whilst reducing our carbon footprint.
A team effort
We are extremely heartened by the way our team, clients, partners and stakeholders have responded to the challenges posed by Covid, and the positive outlook as we move beyond the pandemic. We consider ‘leadership’ to be a collective term at Datum, not something that is limited to the CEO or team leaders. It is about how we serve our clients, the local community and, indeed, all of our stakeholders. Dominic Phillips, Datum Datacentres' CEO commented:
The winning of significant new business at the beginning of the pandemic, followed by the raising of finance and the build of another datacentre during the pandemic was a fantastic achievement by the team. If we are focused on doing the best we possibly can as a group, then we are winning. It is about so much more than bottom line growth - a happy and productive team, client base and stakeholder group is the ultimate goal, and our world class client satisfaction levels reflect the positive impact of our approach.
About Datum Datacentres
Datum Datacentres originated in the service provider world as a sister company to Attenda, a leading managed service and cloud platform provider (later acquired by Ensono). Dominic Phillips (Datum’s CEO) saw a gap in the market and launched Datum in January 2013 to provide secure, resilient and environmentally intelligent colocation and first-class service.
Datum's facility was designed and built from the ground up on Farnborough's Cody Technology Park to offer the very best in security, resilience and environmental efficiency (achieved through the facility's innovative flooded airflow cooling, energy from renewable sources and full carbon offsetting). Datum is a pure play and specialist colocation provider, delivering a secure and resilient platform for digital transformation and strategic technology development. Its partner network delivers the additional wraparound services required by clients for their increasingly multi-platform, hybrid solutions.
Datum's focus on a service-based approach is a key differentiator and an approach that is proving particularly successful. Datum is performing well with an impressive and growing client and partner base (including clients from the FTSE 250 and Fortune 500) and, importantly, valued contract renewals. As a consequence, Datum is now well established as a premium provider at a competitive price point and its outstanding client satisfaction ratings in its annual client surveys are testament to the success of its service-based approach.
