Matt McCluney has been with Datum from the very beginning and has more than earned his Datum stripes. We caught up with Matt to get some insight into his career in tech.
What was the first job role to land you on your tech career ladder?
In the late 1980s I was cold calling my way through the Yellow Pages, sending out 100 compliment slips per day in order to sell fax machines, Telex and PABX phone systems. Oh, how things have changed..
Describe your typical day at Datum in no more than 20 words.
There’s been a paradigm shift since lockdown: emails, LinkedIn and phone calls; chatting to customers and scoping out sales opportunities.
Best thing about working in tech?
The earnings potential.
Worst thing about working in tech?
Currently, it's the reliance on tech! I’m desperate for more face-to-face contact and 'whites of eyes' engagement, which is difficult nowadays.
Which one piece of technology could you not live without?
My phone (but I would sell a kidney for a Nokia 6310!)
Which one piece of technology would you ditch into room 101?
My phone.
Best tech innovation of the last 12 months?
Definitely the development, improvement, availability and choice of EV vehicles.
Who’s your tech hero?
Clive Sinclair – I’m a ZX81 kinda guy.
Apple or Android?
Either – I use both.
What was your first ever games console, and your favourite game?
The Binatone TV Master, which included a whopping six games. Tennis was my particular favourite.
Describe the Datum team in three words
Service, quality, service.
