Farnborough students take part in data centre tours and placements

The visit

29 June 2026, Farnborough, UK – Datum Datacentres was pleased to welcome groups of students from Farnborough College of Technology to its Farnborough site recently.

The visits build on a successful tour programme last year and further strengthen the ongoing relationship between Datum Datacentres and Farnborough College of Technology. Three students from the College, some of whom visited the site previously as part of this data centre tour initiative, are currently undertaking nine-week placements with Datum Datacentres in the hope of securing an apprenticeship.

The students

The students, who are studying T Levels in Support and Security, and in Software Development, were given a valuable opportunity to look around a live data centre environment and gain a better understanding of the role data centres play in supporting the digital economy. During the tours, they also learned more about the sustainability initiatives Datum is undertaking at its London edge and Manchester sites.

As part of the visit, the students were also able to see where FRN2, Datum’s second London edge data centre, is being built adjacent to its flagship FRN1 facility in Farnborough.

The value of the relationship

Datum Datacentres places great importance on the connections it has with the local communities in which its data centres are located, including around its London edge and Manchester facilities. Welcoming students to its sites is one of the ways the company helps young people gain insight into the opportunities available in the digital infrastructure sector.

Neil Pengson, Digital T Level Lecturer at Farnborough College of Technology, said: “We value our ongoing relationship with Datum. The annual tours for our students, along with the placements currently being undertaken by three of our students, are valuable opportunities for them to experience things outside the classroom and see how their learning applies in the real world.”
