From apprentice to Infrastructure Engineer

Jordan Cubbon is Infrastructure Engineer at Datum. His journey with Datum began six years ago this week, when he embarked on a Unified Communications Technician Level 3 apprenticeship with Teledata (now Datum) in 2019. The apprenticeship covered a range of courses, including MTA Networking Fundamentals, MTA Mobility & Device Fundamentals, MTA Cloud Fundamentals, Business Processes, and Coding & Logic.

After completing the apprenticeship, Jordan stayed on immediately, drawn by the opportunities to grow and develop his skills.

“What made me want to stay was the chance to keep learning in the supportive environment Teledata/Datum provides,” he shares.

About Jordan's role

As an Infrastructure Engineer, Jordan’s day-to-day responsibilities are varied and hands-on. His role includes setting up and testing networks for clients, ensuring company devices are up to date through patching, cabling, and addressing any other technical queries that arise.

When asked what makes his role unique compared to other data centres, Jordan admits he can’t reference any direct experience of working in other data centres having stayed on at Teledata/Datum immediately after his apprenticeship, but he states his satisfaction at solving problems and delivering solutions for clients.

Jordan’s take on Datum

For Jordan, the standout aspect of working at Datum is the constant opportunity to learn new skills. “I enjoy picking up new knowledge and seeing how what we do helps our clients,” he says. He also appreciates the motivation and dedication of his colleagues, which creates a positive and driven workplace culture.

Reflecting on the transition from Teledata to Datum, Jordan notes that, from his perspective, not much has changed for him day-to-day, apart an increase in team size and a new company look and feel:

“It’s still the same great team and work environment – there’s just more of us now,” he adds.

Jordan's take on tech

The best and worst thing about tech for Jordan is that there’s always something new being released – it can be hard to keep up, but it certainly keeps it interesting. The one bit of tech he can’t live without? GPS!

Jordan outside work

Outside of the office, Jordan enjoys travelling (he’s by a long way the most travelled member of the Datum team, despite being one of the youngest) and has recently taken up playing padel. He’s also a keen football fan, both watching and playing whenever he gets the chance.

Datum in three words

When asked to sum up Datum in just three words, Jordan chooses: experienced (a proven track record and years of expertise), adaptable (the team thrives in dynamic environments and tailors its approach to each client and project) and reliable (clients can trust Datum to deliver on promises and try to exceed expectations).

Apprenticeship success

Jordan’s journey is a great example of the positive outcome of apprenticeships for the right candidate. With six years under his belt, and as a key part of the Datum team, Jordan is a great example of how apprenticeships can lead to rewarding and fulfilling careers.
